Nutritious and Delicious Homemade Pizza

Are you as good a cook as a fourth-grader? It has been estimated that at least one quarter of American adults grew up in households where home cooking was practically non-existent. Winter is an excellent time to hone beginner cooking skills. Make this delicious and nutritious pizza using good quality natural ingredients without additives or preservatives. Try different toppings, such as chopped black olives, thinly sliced onions, ripe fresh tomatoes, and cut-up sausage and meatballs.

Food Sharing Network proves that even a nine-year-old rookie chef can make first-rate homemade pizza with a minimum of assistance.

Nutritious and Delicious Homemade Pizza

The Basics:

  • 1 lb pizza dough prepared for home use, at room temperature for about 2 hours
  • ½ cup pizza sauce
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ lb whole milk mozzarella, sliced and diced
  • About 10 mushrooms, thinly sliced (optional)*
  • Corn meal

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Dust pizza pan or baking sheet with corn meal. Our demo pan is 16 inches wide, a good size for one pound of dough.

Gently form dough into a flattened ball. Place dough on pan. Using a rolling pin shorter than the diameter or width of the pan, spread out dough evenly. Grown-ups (not kids) can use a smooth, thick glass to finesse the dough as needed.

Spread oil with back of spoon to edges with a light touch.

Spread pizza sauce to about an inch from edge of dough and add toppings.

Meat should be pre-cooked. For example, roast sausage for about 25 minutes at 375 degrees.

Pizza will take 15 to 20 minutes, depending on thickness of crust and oven. When cooking two pizzas, switch pans after about 8 minutes.

Watch carefully toward the end! A few dark spots won’t matter, but a burnt pizza is bitter.

Cut with a very sharp knife or pizza cutter.

Serve with a simple salad and cold soda, red wine or a crisp beer.

Serve with a simple salad of flavorful greens or baby spinach seasoned with salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder and cheese. Dress the greens with a sprinkling of red wine vinegar and just enough extra virgin olive oil to moisten leaves.

*Before slicing, mushrooms should be wiped clean quickly, using cold water and paper towels or a fresh cloth. Don’t allow mushrooms to absorb water.
