“Halloween” Cactus

Christmas Cactus CenterpieceFresh flowers and other seasonal arrangements in December are always a joy, but a flowering plant makes a lovely centerpiece too. I stage plants temporarily on the top of my china cabinet when I need extra room on the table, or if a plant is too tall to accommodate conversation at mealtime.

This particular Christmas cactus blooms very early because I put it outside on our screened-in porch in the summer. My others bloom closer to the end of November or in December. I now have several, all from two small plants of about six inches tall that were received as gifts 15 years ago.

Christmas Cactus Care

You don’t need a green thumb to grow this plant. The care instructions couldn’t be simpler – the Christmas cactus even enjoys being pot-bound.

  • Water thoroughly. I like to water my plants in a sink or bathtub.
  • Allow excess water to drain out bottom hole.
  • Place plant in sunny window.
  • Don’t water again until dry.
