3rd Annual 12 Mile Meal Chef Battle at Northampton Jazz Festival in Northampton, Massachusetts

Cooking and jazz – two of my favorite topics.

Rick Gifford, Twelve Mile Meal

Twelve Mile Meal founder Rick Gifford presents last year’s 12 Mile Meal Lunt Cup to contributing farmers from Northampton’s Tuesday and Saturday farmers’ markets and Serio’s Market. The trophy is presented to groups or individuals who exemplify the community spirit required to sustain local food production, distribution and consumption.

Beautiful weather, great jazz and an exciting professional chef throwdown are all predicted for this Saturday in Northampton, Massachusetts.

12 Mile Meal, which promotes cooking with ingredients from within a 12 mile radius of the venue where the meal will be served, will pair these two delightful disciplines at the 3rd Annual 12 Mile Meal Chef Battle scheduled for the Northampton Jazz Festival this Saturday, September from 11am to 3pm.

Three area restaurants will square off to determine which of its teams can create the best meal with farm fresh foods harvested within a 12 mile radius of the Chef Tent located behind Thorne’s Market Place.

This year’s restaurants are Sierra Grille of Downtown Northampton, Popcorn Noir of Downtown Easthampton and Slainte of the Holyoke Highlands. The chefs, who will not be told their ingredients before the start of the competition, are expected to dazzle onlookers and a fortunate group of VIP diners with outstanding offerings that will give new meaning to the word improvisation.

Equally exciting will be the numerous musicians performing at the five-day-long jazz fest, including the Al Foster Quartet with Eric Alexander, Ben Allison, Hailey Niswanger and The Green Street Trio with Houston Person. VIP seating, which is expected to sellout in advance, is limited to 36 guests. For more information about the throwdown or to reserve VIP seating, visit http://www.12milemeal.com.

  1. I sure wish I could come and participate in this event! As an old friend of Giff (Rick Gifford), I recall him as one of the most engaging, exuberant, and creative people I have met in my lifetime. Your community is lucky to have him and I’m sure this wonderful event will be a great success! super cool. I hope you spawn many copy-cats too. good luck!!
